syslogger is a straight ripoff of splogger. splogger is a utility which comes bundled with qmail. It copies lines from the standard input, and logs them to syslog. For more information, see the man page.

What is syslogger doing here? The utility is so handy, that I'm distributing syslogger for people who don't run qmail. If you do run qmail, you should forget about this package and run /var/qmail/bin/splogger. If you don't run qmail, you should consider running qmail. If all my persuasions fail, you can go ahead and use syslogger.

NOTE: syslogger is my responsibility, not Dan Bernstein's! I stole his code, and I'm responsible for the consequences. Bugs in syslogger should be reported to me. Complaints about syslogger should be reported to me. Nobody should contact Dan for any reason whatsoever connected with syslogger.

NOTE: Even though syslogger contains no original code, you should not assume that syslogger is as good as splogger, as reliable as splogger, or as secure as splogger. Borrowing Dan's code does not entitle me to borrow Dan's reputation or credentials.

Getting syslogger

syslogger was initially released on Monday, May 14, 2001, as version 1.03.

Download syslogger from this site (about 22K). You can also see the lsm entry.

Installation

	tar xvzf syslogger-VERSION.tar.gz
	cd syslogger-VERSION
	make
	make setup check

Licensing

syslogger is issued under the BSD license. Some or all of the source code for syslogger was borrowed from Dan Bernstein, who has not specified what license applies to his code. From his public remarks, I am confident that he doesn't care what is done with his code, as long as:

  1. Nobody thinks that Dan is responsible for your project,
  2. Nobody thinks that Dan endorses your use of his code, and
  3. Nobody bothers Dan about problems with your project, including code borrowed from him.

Note that these restrictions are really a restatement of the spirit of the BSD license. If you use any of my code, I don't want people bothering me, either! The BSD license, together with the DBD (``Don't Bother Dan'') clause, is included in the syslogger distribution. You can also read it here.
