My home LAN is protected by a Linux-based firewall, which doubles as an Internet dialup server using diald. It protects my home LAN every bit as well as most commercial firewalls; probably better than many. Here is a summary of what went into building and securing my home firewall.

The Basic Steps

  1. Start with the right hardware.

  2. Pick the right OS for your firewall.

  3. Install your OS.

  4. Configure your system.

  5. More to come.
